The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. (Dr.) Gift Worlu, on Tuesday inaugurated two strategic committees — the Obio/Akpor International Market Verification Committee and the Obio/Akpor Economic and Investment Summit 2025 Committee — at the Council Secretariat, Rumuodomaya. In his opening address, Dr. Gift Worlu warmly welcomed members of both committees, describing Obio/Akpor as “the heartbeat of Rivers State,” and reiterated his administration’s determination to promote sustainable economic development and transparent market administration.
“We have assessed and reassessed the state of our council and discovered some gaps that require urgent attention. These committees became necessary to help us chart a new course for economic growth, investment sustainability, and better management of our local assets,” he said.
Dr. Gift Worlu noted that the Economic and Investment Summit Committee would be responsible for developing a clear roadmap for the economic transformation of Obio/Akpor, in line with his administration’s vision to create a thriving, self-sustaining local economy.
“We are not unaware of the vast economic potential of Obio/Akpor—not only in taxation but in creating an environment that encourages productivity, business expansion, and community well-being,” he stated.
“If we get it right economically, our people will thrive better, live better, and achieve more.”
He further emphasised the adoption of a triple helix approach to governance, which brings together the academia, government, and the business community to work collaboratively toward the development of the local economy.
Turning attention to the Obio/Akpor International Market, located along Sars Road, the Council Chairman recalled that the facility was established by former Council Chairman, Hon. Chief Timothy Nsirim, describing it as one of the most valuable economic assets of the Local Government.
“That market, if properly managed, can sustain this local government. We commend Chief Timothy Nsirim for his foresight, but unfortunately, the market has become a shadow of its original vision. This verification committee will help us restore it to its intended purpose,” he said.
Performing the inauguration, Dr. Gift Worlu declared: “By the power vested in me as Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, and every other power enabling me in this regard, I hereby inaugurate both committees. I charge you to discharge your duties diligently, faithfully, and to the glory of God.”
The Obio/Akpor Economic and Investment Summit 2025 Committee is chaired by Prof. O. V. C. Okene, while the Obio/Akpor International Market Verification Committee is headed by Rt. Hon. Henry Odum, former Leader of the Obio/Akpor Legislative Council.
Responding on behalf of the Market Verification Committee, Rt. Hon. Henry Odum thanked the Chairman for the confidence reposed in them and recalled his involvement in the legislative process that established the market.
“Coincidentally, I was part of the council that passed the budget for the market project. I assure you that we will do our best to restore and manage the market effectively for the benefit of our people,” Odum said.
Similarly, Dr. Ovunda Ihunwo, speaking on behalf of the Economic and Investment Summit Committee, expressed gratitude to the Chairman for the opportunity to serve.
“Our team is made up of seasoned professionals and individuals with experience. We will soon come up with a workable framework for economic empowerment and sustainable development in Obio/Akpor,” he assured.
