OBIO/AKPOR LG CHAIRMAN ENGAGES FARMERS, CHARTS PATH FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, has engaged farmers across the Local Government Area in an interactive session aimed at identifying challenges confronting the agricultural sector and setting a clear roadmap for sustainable agricultural development.
Speaking at the engagement, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu expressed concern over the low turnout of participants, noting that development requires commitment, seriousness and a strong will to work. He stressed that while government remains committed to supporting farmers, individuals must also demonstrate readiness and the right attitude to succeed.
The Chairman acknowledged key challenges raised by farmers, including insecurity, invasion of farmlands by herders, poor electricity supply, lack of water and inadequate financial support. However, he emphasized that beyond these issues, poor planning, limited knowledge and weak work ethic have continued to hinder agricultural progress.
According to him, blaming government alone will not solve the problems facing the sector, as success depends largely on the ability of individuals to think creatively and adapt to prevailing conditions. He encouraged farmers to work smarter, remain focused and embrace innovation.
Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu advised farmers to start small and grow gradually, warning against rushing into large-scale ventures without proper training or experience. He noted that many people fail in business not because of lack of funds, but because they venture into areas they do not understand.
He disclosed that the Obio/Akpor Local Government would prioritize capacity building, revealing plans to sponsor practical and result-oriented training programmes for farmers. According to him, financial support without adequate knowledge often leads to waste, while training and skill acquisition create sustainable wealth.
In her opening remarks, the Director of Agriculture, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Mrs. Lovely Joyce Urang, expressed gratitude to God and commended the Chairman for his visionary leadership and approval of the interactive session. She described the meeting as a vital platform to bridge gaps, improve collaboration and reposition agriculture as a viable business for the benefit of the people and the state at large.
Farmers at the forum highlighted challenges affecting their operations, including insecurity, destruction of farmlands by herders, poor electricity supply and the need for increased government support.
