The House of Representatives on Friday received a petition from the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, over alleged police complicity in the crisis rocking several communities within the council area.
Presenting the petition during plenary, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives and Member representing Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency, Rep. Kingsley Ogundu Chinda, informed the House that the petition was directed against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
According to Rep. Chinda, the local government chairman expressed concern that βseveral communities within the local government appear to be in crisis as a result of the actions of some police officers and certain individuals referred to as land grabbers.β He added that the invasion of these communities has allegedly led to the displacement of residents and a breakdown of law and order.
The Minority Leader described the situation as worrisome, noting that the petitioner sought the urgent intervention of the House to call the Nigeria Police Force to order and ensure peace and normalcy are restored to the affected communities.
βMr Speaker, I have a petition from Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. The petition is against the Inspector-General of Police, and the thrust of the petition is that several communities within his local government area appear to be in crisis resulting from the actions of some police officers and individuals described as land grabbers,β Chinda stated.
Following the presentation, the Speaker of the House granted leave for Rep Kingsley Ogundu Chinda to formally lay the petition before the House for further legislative consideration.
