RIWAMA SEEKS COLLABORATION WITH OBIO/AKPOR COUNCIL TO SUSTAIN CLEAN ENVIRONMENT DRIVE

The Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) has sought strategic collaboration with the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, aimed at sustaining and strengthening ongoing efforts to keep the area clean and environmentally safe.
The RIWAMA delegation, led by the Managing Director, Dr. Ibimina Wokoma, paid a courtesy visit to the council boss at the council headquarters, where discussions centered on improving waste management systems and enhancing environmental sanitation across Obio/Akpor.
Speaking during the meeting, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu emphasized the importance of environmental consciousness in governance, noting that meaningful development can only be achieved through collaboration with relevant departments and agencies.
Highlighting recent interventions, the Chairman referenced the transformation of the Oil Mill axis, stating that the council’s efforts have not only eased vehicular and human movement but also significantly improved sanitation in the area.
Hon. Gift Worlu further stressed that governance goes beyond brick and mortar projects, pointing out that environmental sustainability is a critical component of effective leadership.
He called for a strategic meeting involving RIWAMA, the Ministry of Environment, and other critical stakeholders to develop a comprehensive roadmap for sustainable waste management in the area. He suggested that academic institutions should be part of the initiative, citing Akwa Ibom State as one of the cleanest states in Nigeria due to deliberate planning and collaboration.
In his remarks, the Managing Director of RIWAMA, Dr. Ibimina Wokoma, commended the Obio/Akpor Chairman for his proactive approach to environmental sanitation and reiterated the state government’s commitment to effective waste management.
Dr. Wokoma reminded residents that approved dumping time is between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., stressing that any defaulter would be prosecuted in accordance with the law while also soliciting for the provision of additional receptacles in strategic locations within the LGA.
He concluded by formally requesting partnership and continuous collaboration with the Obio/Akpor Local Government Council to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for residents, while commending Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu for his ongoing developmental strides in the area.
