The Marriage Registrar is the statutory officer responsible for the administration, regulation, and documentation of marriages within Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, in accordance with the Marriage Act and other applicable laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The office ensures that all marriages conducted under the statutory framework meet legal requirements and are properly recorded for official and public reference.
Core Responsibilities:
♦ Receive and process notices of marriage from intending couples.
♦ Verify submitted documents and ensure compliance with legal requirements (age, consent, marital status, etc.)
♦ Schedule and solemnize statutory marriages in line with legal provisions.
♦ Maintain accurate and secure marriage records and registers.
♦ Issue certified true copies of marriage certificates as required.
♦ Conduct official searches and verification of marriage records.
♦ Provide advisory services to couples on statutory marriage procedures and requirements.
♦ Educate the public on the differences between statutory, customary, and religious marriages.
♦ Liaise with licensed places of worship to ensure compliance with marriage regulations.
♦ Monitor adherence to due process and address irregularities in marriage solemnization.
♦ Generate revenue through collection of prescribed marriage fees and ensure proper accountability and remittance.
Administrative and Reporting Functions:
♦ Maintain statistics and data on registered and conducted marriages.
♦ Participate in workshops, sensitization programmes, and public enlightenment campaigns.
Ethical Standards:
♦ Uphold integrity, confidentiality, and impartiality in all dealings.
♦ Ensure transparency and accountability in service delivery.
♦ Treat all clients with professionalism, fairness, and respect.
