OBI0/AKPOR COUNCIL CELEBRATES CHILDREN’S DAY, ADVOCATES CHILDREN’S RIGHTS, ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY AND DIGITAL EMPOWERMENT

The Obio/Akpor Local Government Council on Wednesday celebrated the 2026 Children’s Day with a strong call for the protection of children’s rights, environmental safety and digital empowerment.
The colourful event, held at the council headquarters, brought together pupils, students, teachers, traditional rulers, health experts and community leaders in celebration of children across the Local Government Area.
The Wife of the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Mrs Flora Gift Worlu in her address said the celebration serves as a reminder that every child is important and deserves protection, empowerment and opportunities to thrive.
Speaking further, she emphasized the importance of education, health care, protection and freedom of expression for children, assuring that the council would continue to collaborate with schools, health centres and traditional rulers to ensure that children enjoy their rights and privileges.
On environmental safety, she urged children and residents to maintain clean surroundings, avoid indiscriminate waste disposal and participate actively in tree planting and sanitation exercise.
The Wife of the Chairman also expressed sympathy over the reported abduction of over 40 children in Oyo State, praying for their safe return and reunion with their families.
She concluded by wishing children in Obio/Akpor a joyful and memorable Children’s Day celebration, praying for continued growth and success in their lives.
As part of the event, a keynote speaker, Dr. Jaja, educated students on the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), its causes, prevention and the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles.
Also speaking, Prof. Houma Nsirim Worlu delivered a lecture on environmental sustainability, greenhouse gases, climate change and the need for tree planting, while encouraging students to become advocates for environmental protection within their communities.
