The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, has reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in its drive to ensure that every eligible resident is enrolled in the National Identity Number (NIN) database.
This assurance was given during a meeting between the Principal officers of the Obio/Akpor Local Government Council and a delegation from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Rivers State, led by the State Coordinator, Mr. Amaga David Akawu, at the Council Secretariat in Rumuodumaya.
Representing the Chairman, the Vice Chairman of the Council, Dr. Joyce Nyeche, welcomed the NIMC delegation and assured them that their requests and observations would be conveyed to the Chairman for necessary consideration.
She commended the Commission’s outreach initiative, describing it as a welcome development that would bring identity registration services closer to the people.
Dr. Nyeche emphasized that the importance of obtaining a National Identity Number (NIN) cannot be overemphasized, noting that it has become an essential requirement for accessing numerous government and private sector services.
Speaking earlier, the Rivers State Coordinator of NIMC, Mr. Amaga David Akawu, said the Commission is determined to reach every community across the state, including remote areas, to ensure that no eligible resident is left out of the national identity database.
He explained that the NIN has become indispensable for accessing vital services, including opening bank accounts, obtaining loans, purchasing property, and carrying out several other official and financial transactions.
Mr. Akawu appealed to the Obio/Akpor Local Government Council to assist the Commission in improving the working conditions of its office in the Council by providing essential office furniture, appliances, chairs, logistics and financial support to enhance service delivery.
