The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, on Wednesday, convened a crucial peace meeting at the Council Secretariat, Rumuodomaya, with stakeholders involved in the ongoing land dispute at Rumuekini and Rumuosi communities.
The meeting, held despite the public holiday, brought together representatives of Rumuekini community, the Rumuawhuechor family, Odibola Properties (a real estate company), doctors from the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), lecturers from Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, the Rumuekini Council of Chiefs, youths, and the Community Development Committee (CDC).
Speaking to newsmen shortly after the meeting, Hon. Dr. Worlu emphasized that the intervention was driven by the council’s resolve to curb the growing menace of land grabbing in Obio/Akpor and beyond.
“This meeting is predicated on our desire to ensure that the menace of land grabbing, which has become a serious issue in Obio/Akpor, other LGAs in Rivers State, and the Niger Delta, is addressed in line with government’s mandate to protect lives and property,” he said.
He explained that since the matter is before the courts, the council cannot determine ownership but is working to ensure peace is maintained among all parties.
The Chairman disclosed that while the Court of First Instance ruled in favour of one party, the Rumuawuchu family has appealed the judgment. He added that clarity on whether a stay of execution is required is being sought, noting that the outcome will guide further decisions on ongoing activities on the disputed land.
Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu expressed satisfaction that the meeting began and ended peacefully, with all parties pledging to pursue peace. He further announced that another meeting has been scheduled for Saturday, when further pronouncements will be made.
“We ask the public and all parties involved to maintain peace. In the end, we will speak the truth, and the truth will set us free,” he concluded.
